Entering the Thanksgiving holiday, I know one thing I am thankful for is taking the time to visit these earlier 22 issues of Scarlet Street. I've mentioned before, this was not a re-visit, as the first time I recall laying eyes on the magazine was with #23. In a way, as I look back on these early years, I realize I had missed a sort of golden-age of the magazine. For one thing, I missed Jeremy Brett. While Mr. Brett would never be forgotten in these pages, it was while enjoying the journey of these 22 issues where I decided I had to see some of his work, and especially as Mr. Sherlock Holmes, I was hooked immediately. Small wonder he enjoyed such coverage in Scarlet Street, and of course to not really know about him is to miss a huge portion of what the magazine was all about.
These issues were really quite amazing. They were just as big and exciting as the ones I remember, and in the wake of missing the old gang, were surely a wonder to go back to and explore for the first time. For a while, I was back home again.
I'm not certain, but I think also for the first time Richard Valley began struggling with the costs of maintaining Scarlet Street. This issue marked the beginning of a new and glossy look. It was produced at a new printer in Quebec. The number of pages was reduced a little down to 100, and for the first time instead of 4 issues there would only be 3 in the year of 1996. I presume this was the reason the name of the season would be dropped from the issue number, even though Scarlet Street would continue to strive to be a quarterly magazine.
One thing I can tell you for certain, it was a joy to re-produce here and I absolutely look forward to the next post which will come about in time for Christmas. In the meantime, have a very Happy Thanksgiving, and see you next month!
